Life is a journey
This project invites an exploration of life’s journey and meaning as interpreted by the viewer.
It comprises five surreal images, each depicting a different stage along that journey. The
images are expressive, interpretive and imaginative, while the narrative is contemplative -
inviting the viewer to imagine and consider their own life journey. The work’s surreal nature
and strong use of light and colour seek to capture the viewer’s attention, drawing them in, to
look more closely at the imagery and the story, while also inviting them to briefly escape into
a world of beauty, fantasy and wonder of their own imagining.

The first image in the series, titled “the journey begins”, illustrates the beginning of a life's
journey with all its mystery, hope, turmoil and adventure that lies ahead. It shows a boy (not
yet fully formed and emerging from a cocoon type enclosure) floating in space and time, and
holding a torch to light his way to a gateway in the universe – a portal to his future.

The series continues with the boy exiting the wormhole to find a pathway, inviting him to
continue his journey through exploration and discovery. As the boy grows, he is required to
face life’s challenges, and overcome them through dedication and commitment. His journey
eventually brings him to a place of reflection and introspection – a space and time to
consider his failings and achievements, and to contemplate how he will be remembered.
Finally, he reaches life’s final door, with all the mystery and wonder that lies beyond.

The surreal imagined through composite photography allows the story of realistic imagery to
be retold in a form moulded by imagination. The surreal rouses imagination and beckons the
viewer to make their own sense of what they see, asking them to look more deeply into the
imagery to find a meaning that resonates with them on a personal level – a thought or feeling
